A little backstory on "These Kids"...
I was never sure I wanted kids. I figured if I did, that I didn’t need to stress about it–that I’d simply wake up one day and know for sure, one way or another. And that’s pretty much what happened. This song is about all the introspection that naturally came before the day that I woke up and *knew*. The decision to have children can be a complex one. Our ancestors are a part of it, our hometowns are a part of it, our legacies are a part of it. What deeper connections will benefit us all–in the present and future? What rewards will outweigh risks? What will it *feel* like? But after all the introspection, what–ultimately–does our heart/gut say? Because maybe it’s a simple decision after all. "These Kids" starts and ends with the lyrics “I care, my heir.” And I guess there’s my answer.
